TestBook / T4 was the official workshop diagnostic system used by authorised Rover, MG, Mini, Land Rover and Range Rover dealers and workshops. With the correct diagnostic CD and vehicle adapter, it provides the original manufacturer-specific diagnostic, service, configuration and programming functions supported for the relevant vehicle and control unit—not merely basic universal OBD access.

A complete system brings together

  • Diagnostic laptop
  • Omitec T4 VCI
  • Main diagnostic cable
  • Vehicle-specific adapter
  • Vehicle-specific diagnostic CD

What is TestBook / T4?

Rover TestBook and the later T4 configuration form a complete dealer workshop platform. The laptop is the diagnostic computer, while the Omitec T4 vehicle communication interface, cabling, adapter and diagnostic software establish communication with the vehicle. The system’s value lies in the manufacturer-specific workshop functions contained in the relevant diagnostic CD and supported by the vehicle’s installed control units.

More than a code reader

TestBook can access the diagnostic, service, configuration, initialisation and programming routines made available by the manufacturer for a supported vehicle and diagnostic CD.

Coverage is system-dependent

The hardware alone does not determine vehicle coverage. The exact capability depends on the CD, its language version, the correct adapter, the vehicle configuration and the installed control unit.

Why TestBook is still important

Many older British vehicles were developed before today’s broadly standardised diagnostic environment. A universal tool may read selected fault codes, but access to older manufacturer-specific control units, configuration routines and programming functions can be limited. TestBook provides the original workshop functionality where that functionality is supported by the vehicle and diagnostic CD.

Manufacturer-specific access

Communication routines and guided functions created for the relevant Rover, MG, Mini, Land Rover or Range Rover application.

Configuration and matching

Access to supported control-unit configuration, initialisation, immobiliser matching and vehicle setup functions.

Older control systems

A practical route to systems that may only be partially accessible with a modern universal diagnostic tool.

Dealer-level diagnostic functions

The available functions include the following categories. The exact menu options and procedures always depend on the vehicle, installed control unit and diagnostic CD.

Fault diagnosis

  • Reading and clearing fault codes
  • Manufacturer-specific diagnostic routines

Live data and actuator tests

  • Live data and measured values
  • Actuator tests
  • Control-unit input and output checks

Service and calibration

  • Service functions
  • Initialisation routines
  • Supported calibration procedures

Control-unit configuration

  • Control-unit configuration
  • Vehicle configuration
  • BCU functions

Security, immobiliser and key functions

  • Key programming
  • Immobiliser programming and matching

Manufacturer-specific programming

  • Work involving engine control units
  • Programming and manufacturer-specific setup functions

Chassis, body and comfort systems

  • ABS diagnostics
  • Airbag diagnostics
  • Climate-control diagnostics
  • Gearbox diagnostics
  • Body-electronics diagnostics

Land Rover and Range Rover air suspension

For supported applications, TestBook can provide manufacturer-defined air-suspension diagnosis, live values, actuator functions, calibration and other model-specific routines. Exact functions depend on the model and diagnostic CD.

Confirmed brands and model families

M1N1 has practically all available diagnostic CDs for the model families listed below. Listing a model family does not imply that every function is present on every vehicle; capability remains dependent on the relevant CD, vehicle configuration and installed control units.

  • MG F
  • MG TF
  • MG ZR
  • MG ZS
  • MG ZT

Rover

  • Rover Mini SPI
  • Rover Mini MPI
  • Rover Maestro
  • Rover Montego
  • Rover 200
  • Rover 400
  • Rover 600
  • Rover 800
  • Rover 25
  • Rover 45
  • Rover 75

Land Rover

  • Freelander
  • Freelander 2
  • Defender
  • Discovery
  • Discovery 2

Range Rover

  • Range Rover Classic
  • New Range Rover

Classic Mini

Classic Mini applications are supported where the relevant manufacturer diagnostic CD, vehicle adapter and installed control system provide coverage. Confirm the exact vehicle and required function before choosing a configuration.

Very early vehicles and MEMS 1.3

Some very early vehicles from approximately 1993 and 1994, particularly applications based on the MEMS 1.3 engine control unit, require additional TestBook interface hardware. The required hardware combination includes:

The Microlink InterfaceBox is also known as the TIM unit and is used for early vehicles normally serviced with the MicroCheck tool, including early SPI Mini applications with the dual-plug MEMS 1.3 ECU. The exact requirement still depends on the vehicle, ECU and diagnostic connection, so these vehicles should be checked individually before selecting a system configuration.

How the TestBook T4 system works

  1. Laptop: runs the Rover / Land Rover diagnostic environment and selected diagnostic CD.
  2. Omitec T4 VCI: provides the communication interface between diagnostic computer and vehicle.
  3. Main cable: connects the VCI to the chosen vehicle-specific adapter.
  4. Vehicle adapter: provides the correct physical and electrical connection for the application.
  5. Diagnostic CD: supplies the model-family functions, routines and language-specific interface.

Important: owning an Omitec T4 VCI does not by itself establish vehicle coverage. The diagnostic CD and correct adapter are decisive, and the vehicle’s installed control units determine which functions can actually be used. Some very early 1993/1994 MEMS 1.3 ECU applications require the separate DTC0001B Microlink InterfaceBox, DTC0007A Main Cable 1 and DTC0006A BrickBox hardware path.

TestBook diagnostic CDs and languages

Vehicle-specific software

Diagnostic CDs are specific to a vehicle or model family. Systems supplied by M1N1 are typically delivered with Rover and MG diagnostic CDs preinstalled. Additional CDs can be supplied or installed according to customer requirements.

German or English versions

Each diagnostic CD has its own language. German or English versions can be provided where available, so the requested language must be considered when selecting the software set.

Complete systems and individual configuration

A TestBook system can be configured around a workshop, collection or specific vehicle requirement. The starting point is the vehicle list and the functions that matter in day-to-day work. From there, the appropriate diagnostic CDs, language versions and adapters can be selected.

Workshop configuration

For specialists maintaining several confirmed Rover, MG, Land Rover or Range Rover model families.

Collection configuration

For a defined group of vehicles requiring a planned combination of CDs and adapters.

Vehicle-specific configuration

For customers who need access to a particular model, control unit or manufacturer-provided function.

Who uses TestBook / T4 today?

  • Rover and MG specialists
  • Land Rover and Range Rover specialists
  • Classic-vehicle workshops
  • Collectors
  • Museums
  • Technically experienced private owners
  • International specialists maintaining older British vehicles

Why choose a configured system rather than an incomplete used system?

A used laptop or interface can appear complete while still lacking essential parts or the correct software combination. Practical risks include:

  • Missing Omitec T4 VCI
  • Missing main cable or vehicle adapters
  • Missing Microlink, BrickBox or other interface hardware required for early applications
  • Unsuitable or missing diagnostic CDs
  • Wrong language version
  • Incomplete installation
  • Untested hardware
  • Unclear vehicle coverage
