A well-known weakness of many EFI ECUs is their poor reliability and lack of serviceability.
In practice, these units frequently fail – and once they do, they cannot be repaired or properly diagnosed.
This makes them a dead end for any long-term solution.
A proven alternative is the Rover/Motorola MEMS-3 ECU.
It is significantly more robust and, unlike EFI systems, can be fully diagnosed and programmed using freely available software and a standard OBD adapter.
However, one key limitation remains:
The MEMS-3 does not provide the required signal conditioning for vehicle speed and coolant temperature, which is originally handled by the EFI ECU.
