A personal history of cars and motorcycles

Mainly a memory aid, but perhaps entertaining as well. From Mk1 Golfs and Fiat Uno Turbos to classic Minis, BMW convertibles, Lotus, Jaguar and Porsche.

The complete vehicle history

Fifty-eight cars, motorcycles and one extremely useful Mini trailer — with personal memories, successes and the occasional questionable purchase.

  1. VW Golf Mk1 LS, 70 hp — later approximately 85 hp.
  2. VW Golf Mk1 GTI, 110 hp.
  3. VW Beetle 1303 LS Convertible, 50 hp — three engines in six months.
  4. VW Golf Mk1 GTI, 110 hp — finished its career upside down at the Aachen motorway interchange.
  5. Fiat Uno Turbo, white, 105 hp — felt more like 120.
  6. Fiat Uno Turbo, black, 100 hp — also felt like rather more.
  7. Opel Rekord 2.0, 110 hp — an impulse purchase.
  8. Yamaha YS 400 — a genuinely difficult machine.
  9. Mazda MX-5 Miata, 115 hp — imported new from Florida.
  10. VW Golf Mk2 G60 — a fantastic car, later stolen in the Netherlands.
  11. Honda CBX 1000 — six cylinders, 24 valves and unforgettable.
  12. Mazda 626 Xerxes — bought mainly because of Dutch taxation.
  13. VW Golf Mk3 GTI.
  14. BMW 325i Convertible E30 — also stolen in the Netherlands.
  15. BMW 318i Convertible E36 — sold when the family grew.
  16. VW Golf Mk3 VR6.
  17. VW Jetta Automatic — visually not a unanimous family favourite.
  18. Renault Twingo — no power steering and therefore not universally popular.
  19. BMW 316i Compact E36.
  20. BMW 320i Convertible E30.
  21. VW Polo HomeBoy — one of 25 special editions, but slightly too small.
  22. BMW 318i Touring E36 — sold faster than it was bought, and profitably.
  23. BMW 520i Touring Automatic — extremely spacious, perhaps a little too spacious.
  24. Porsche 911 Targa, model 993 — kept for only a few months.
  25. VW Golf Mk3 GTI — ultimately too expensive.
  26. VW Bora Variant — the end of a long discussion phase.
  27. Renault Mégane Scénic Automatic — not a lasting success.
  28. BMW 330i Touring E46 — excellent.
  29. Mercedes-Benz SLK 230 Kompressor — retired after an accident on the Cologne ring road.
  30. BMW Z3 3.0i Automatic — attractive, but slower than the Touring.
  31. BMW 328i Convertible Automatic E36 — a bargain from Hamburg.
  32. BMW 330d Touring E46 — even better.
  33. BMW 525d Touring — a very fine family car.
  34. Mini Mayfair Sport, 10-inch wheels, 1984.
  35. BMW 530d Touring E61 — excellent, but heavy.
  36. Mini trailer — indispensable when Minis need transporting.
  37. Mini SPI, 12-inch wheels, 1996.
  38. Mini Cooper Si special edition, 1995 — currently in the collection.
  39. BMW 335d Touring E91 — 335 hp and 650 Nm.
  40. Mini Clubman Estate, 1978 model, more than 100 hp — currently in the collection.
  41. Lotus Elise Mk1 — currently in the collection.
  42. BMW 325d Touring E91, 2011 model — rather restrained.
  43. BMW Z3 1.9i Roadster — a wedding-anniversary gift.
  44. Audi A5 Sportback 3.0 TDI — front-wheel drive remained less than ideal.
  45. VW Golf Mk3 Convertible, 1996 — for the eldest son.
  46. Audi A6 Avant 3.0 TDI quattro — a large car that could be surprisingly economical when driven gently.
  47. BMW 128i Convertible — US model with a 3.0-litre straight-six.
  48. Jaguar XKR Convertible, 2004 — 4.2-litre supercharged V8.
  49. Jaguar XJ6 2.7d Biturbo, 2007.
  50. Audi S3 quattro, 2002, 265 hp — currently in the collection.
  51. Porsche 911 (996) Twin Turbo, manual, Techart, 2001 — currently in the collection.
  52. Porsche 911 (996) Twin Turbo Tiptronic, 2001 — currently in the collection.

The list currently ends at 58. Whether it stays that way is doubtful.
